Imagine you be infected any bacterial infection, and the next day your family and friends blame you to be the cursed one, and telling you to depart away from them or else they too will catch this disease ,and you end up in the streets and now a destitute the very next moment?? Think friend,
The disease is known as Hansen’s disease, which is caused by bacillus micro bacterium leprae (The distant relative of the bacillus that causes T.B). The disease is capable of causing blindness deformity of locomotive organs and handicaps etc. The most insignificant and concerning factor regarding the disease is its socially unexpected and acute discrimination is made by the society to these badly effected by the disease, who are mostly willing or forcefully sent away in any corner from the society or community. Later are forced to beg and survive, if unattended these people would not have shelter to live. Today still 6,000 new cases of leprosy are detected every day. India, Nepal and Sri Lanka contribute to 1/3rd population pf leper of the world.
Our society took this bold step to built the shelter for these lepers patients. On April 2003 society received the application from the leper colony in Haridwar (Chandersheker Azad Kust Ashram, Chandighat) with the request to provide the shelter to 42 families who are infected by this dreaded disease and all are handicapped, who rely on the alms of the local pilgrims in Haridwar.
The Eamon Melaugh housing projects for leper was launched on April 2003.
Objective of the project:
# To construct the low cost concrete house.
# To rehabilitate the leper family.
# To avail Medical health care dispensary.
# To distribute the wheelchairs, tricycles and walking aids to the disabled lepers.
Till now we are able to construct and rehabilitate 28 houses for the destitute and
oppressed lepers and donated these houses to them.
