Women empowerment
Fact files
• Serious gender discrimination arises
from the persistent traditional
preference for the sons over daughters.
Girls are more disadvantaged than the
boys from birth, receive less care and
fewer and opportunities, and are more
rigorously socialized to accept a
secondary status at home and society.
• A number of female births are
consciously prevented. Though Indian law
now curbs the detection of sex. But it
is still widely practiced in hidden,
especially in the villages. Female
infanticides still persist in India.
• The national sex ratio is skewed is
933females per 1000 males.
• Due to the prevalence of the dowry
practice related to the girls, they are
stated as the economic burden to the
parents thus it increases the chances of
secondary treatment to the girl child.
• Women are subjected to the violence
and ultimate murder or forced suicides.
• Lack of Education, coupled with lack
of opportunity for conscious social
choice, continues to undermine the
rights of Indian girls and women, and
perpetuate a low self-image.
